Despite subsiding to a 3-0 defeat against Group E underdogs Romania in their opening contest of Euro 2024, Ukraine are strong favourites to respond with a win over Slovakia. Slovakia were aided on two occasions by the VAR in the second half, with Romelu Lukaku twice seeing equalising strikes ruled out. Friday will probably not be straightforward for Slovakia, who have won just two of their eight meetings with Ukraine in all competitions. Slovakia’s next aim will be winning two games at a single major tournament for the first time in history, having managed one victory at every one of their previous campaigns.

Ukraine was comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Romania in the joint-second biggest defeat of the tournament so far. It included costly errors from Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka provides a sprinkling of star dust in midfield and Ukraine, despite possessing emerging talents from some top of Europe’s club side. Nicolae Stanciu crashed in one of the best goals of the tournament so far with his curling opener on Monday, while Razvan Marin followed suit with another long-range finish.

Ondrej Duda was withdrawn in the 94th minute through injury but it’s difficult to decipher whether that was a genuine concern or merely a bit of time-wasting. Everton’s Vitaliy Mykolenko remains a doubt having missed the recent defeat with injury. Oleksandr Zinchenko must fill in at left-back instead of operating in midfield.

Slovakia looked on course of another victory after Ivan Schranz’s header early in first half. They dominated most of the opening 45 minutes but failed to score. Ukraine dominated the second half. Shaparenko equalised for Ukraine in the 54th minute, scoring from close range following Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross and then Roman Yaremchuk’s strike completed a sensational comeback for the Ukrainians.
